The year was 1997. It was nearly the end of my 6th grade year, and I was an unpopular, weird middle schooler, just trying to figure out where I fit into everything. Sure, I had a small group of friends, and I wasn’t mercilessly bullied or anything, but come on, I was in sixth grade. Middle school is universally the worst ever, and anyone who says differently is a liar or incredibly delusional.
Anyway, I don’t remember the specifics, but E, a friend of mine since elementary school, told me to watch the season finale of this WB show about a vampire slayer. She’d been watching since it premiered, and even nicknamed me Will/Willow, our friend C was Cordy, and her then-boyfriend J was Angel. Naturally. Anyway, I think I actually ended up watching the episode with my dad, who bizarrely loved it, primarily because of the dialogue. I did like the finale, but it wasn’t without encouragement from E that I continued watching into the second season; and I didn’t really get into it until “What’s My Line?” which I fault for my complete obsession for the show that has lasted until this very day.
So I guess what I’m trying to say is thank you to E. Buffy was and is a huge inspiration for me, and without her insistence to keep watching, I might not have ever gotten the stimulus to start developing The Legion a few years later, or hell, even Paradiso, my other current project (that I’m actually working on this month for NaNoWriMo). Time will tell if the world deserves that or not.
