I’m going to preface this with a trigger warning for talking about suicide, so please feel free to skip past this one.
I actually argued with myself while picking the most upsetting death because this definitely fits the bill there, but I actually think this moment is more appropriate for this post because damn, I wasn’t expecting this. I really should learn to notice cinematic signs that some shit’s about to go down: dwelling on a seemingly insignificant action, momentary emotional contentment, etc. I mean, I’m pretty good at it, considering I knew, as soon as Admiral Cain entered her quarters after the successful resurrection ship mission, that Gina was in the room and was going to kill her, inadvertently keeping Adama from having to do so later. But with Dee? I had no fucking clue.
It was so nice to see her happy after seeing her reaction to the condition of Earth, a place she longed to find. A place she hoped would bring the end of running for her life. Dee had gone through so much, especially the last season, and then she starts to reconcile with her estranged husband, Lee.
“I just want to hang on to this feeling as long as I can.”
But then, boom. She was gone. Oh, the tears and shock that followed her suicide. I was furious the writers would take this direction with her, and the fact I didn’t see it coming made it all the worse. It brought back so many memories of a friend of mine who shot himself back in high school: the loss, the anger, the depression, the confusion. I understood why, but it was just so sudden, so fucking painful.
And that’s all I can really write about this without drudging up a lot of miserable thoughts, so I’ll just say I hope you all have a lovely day.
