Now, I love Alia Shawkat. She’s an incredible actor, and I’ve enjoyed her in everything that I’ve seen her in (yes, on Arrested Development, too), but Maeby? I just don’t have as much love for the character as I do for the rest of the family.

Like … it’s hard to explain. She has the same self-centered nature that the rest of her family has, so you would think that I would be just as in love with her as I am with, say, Lucille, but I just … find her more obnoxious. At first, a lot of her antics were more about her getting her parents’ attention, but then she just became horrible for horribleness’ sake. I kinda feel like the writers just didn’t really know what to do with Maeby after a few seasons and just kept putting her in weirder situations that just fostered her already sociopathic tendencies. Seasons four and five were also not great for Maeby; I hated the whole thing where she was sleeping with a 17-year-old boy …

I feel bad talking shit about the character, because there were some genuinely funny moments – the above cross necklace gag is one of my favorites – but I just don’t find myself laughing at a lot of the jokes surrounding her and her antics.
