Well, that was bracing. I will definitely be talking about a few of the movies from last week in more depth when I get a chance, but for now, it’s onto Week Two. Oh, and correction from last week! I realized that I had misspoken when I said I hadn’t ever seen Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, but LOL, I actually own the movie – I just haven’t watched it in several years. The reason I opened with it this year is because I watched the 1980s Vampire Hunter D movie in 2020 and was sorely disappointed. Luckily, my feelings about Bloodlust haven’t changed too much over the years.

I ended up not being able to watch Thursday and Friday’s movies (Jennifer’s Body & The Descent), so I’ll be adding them to this week’s list. Luckily, I am getting a much needed break from weekly clinicals, so it’s a bit easier to fit them in. But anyway, onto what I’m putting into my eyeballs this week:

  • Oct 10: Night of the Comet (also Jennifer’s Body)
  • Oct 11: The Return of the Living Dead
  • Oct 12: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (also The Descent)
  • Oct 13: Slither
  • Oct 14: The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
  • Oct 15: The Strangers
  • Oct 16: DOUBLE FEATURE – Parasite / The Host

Now, I have already seen Slither, but that was back when it came out and I actually saw it in the theater. I think this was actually my first run-in with anything involving Nathan Fillion, so I’m pretty sure a lot of my commentary is going to include lots of lusting after him. As far as the double feature goes, I’m continuing my director theme, this time being Bong Joon-ho, and I will be using this experience to celebrate finishing my stats course that has been the academic equivalent of a hemorrhoid.

As always, I’ll be live-tweeting as I watch, so please join me as I try to scare myself! I’d appreciate the virtual company.

In a bid to keep myself accountable in my creative pursuits whilst in nursing school, I’m going to make myself some additional challenges. Naturally, school does have to come first, so I may have to fudge some things, but my plan is to watch at least one horror movie per day throughout the entire month of October – with Saturdays being my double feature days – at around 8:00P (2000, for you military time people). Mondays and Thursdays will probably end up being a little earlier than that, due to clinicals, but whatever.

But anyway, this first week of the month is only two days long, so I’m just going to include the following week here:

  • Oct 1: Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
  • Oct 2: DOUBLE FEATURE – Audition and Hausu/House
  • Oct 3: Willy’s Wonderland
  • Oct 4: American Werewolf in London
  • Oct 5: Them!
  • Oct 6: Drag Me to Hell
  • Oct 7: Jennifer’s Body
  • Oct 8: The Descent
  • Oct 9: DOUBLE FEATURE – Dawn of the Dead (Snyder) / Army of the Dead

My double feature days have two themes: the first is Japanese horror, which apparently is way creepier than Western horror (I’ve never seen the original Japanese Ringu, so I don’t know how it compares to The Ring), and the second is Zack Snyder, which is a director I’ve tried to steer clear of for many reasons. I hated his Justice League take, and most of the other movies he’s made are just … blah? But I’ve heard good things about his horror movies, so I’m going to give him a chance there.

Don’t disappoint me, Snyder (like you care).

Now, I’ve never seen any of these movies, but this looks like a shit ton of fun based on reviews I’ve read. I’ll be live-tweeting as I watch, too, so please join me as I try to scare myself!

Yep, I’m doing it again this year. I had so much fun last October that a) I actually watched some horror movies in a non-Halloween-adjacent setting and b) I decided that it would 100% be worth doing a second time. Hell, it may become a yearly thing? Who knows? Plus, I’m needing a nice way to wind down after a long day of nursing school, and although you might think that horror movies aren’t necessarily the way to do this? Well, I apparently only get nightmares about giant, floating orbs surrounded by a sea of literal nothingness and occasionally threats that I’m still married.

Just as a recap, last year, I watched these movies, in no particular order:

  • The Conjuring
  • The Conjuring 2
  • Evil Dead
  • Evil Dead 2
  • Night of the Living Dead
  • Dawn of the Dead *
  • Day of the Dead
  • Phantasm
  • The Haunting
  • Vampire Hunter D (1985)
  • Poltergeist
  • Bone Tomahawk *
  • Masque of the Red Death
  • Colour Out of Space *
  • Mandy *
  • Blair Witch Project

My plan initially was to watch a horror movie each night, but LOL school and work prevented that from happening. I’m still in school, obviously, but I think that I can get at least three during the week and a double feature on Saturday? Which comes out to about 24 movies? I may be acting overly ambitious here, but we shall see. I’ll be doing live viewings on Twitter, so just follow me over there and feel free to join in on #Horrorpalooza2021!

But here’s the paltry list I have so far. Feel free to leave me suggestions (except body horror, I have no interest in that, thanks)!

  • Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
  • Willy’s Wonderland
  • Peeping Tom
  • Audition
  • [REC]
  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers
  • The Host

* These were my favorites from #Horrorpalooza2020, and if you haven’t seen them, you totally should.
