In the light of recent TV show finales that were awful (sorry, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, I love you and the actors did a great job, but …), I decided to pull out my DVD collection of Battlestar Galactica and rewatch the finale to see if any of my opinions changed since the last time I did this challenge. And well … it hasn’t.

31 Day Challenge: Battlestar Galactica, Day 29: Something That Didn’t Happen I Wish Did
Admiral Cain* was a great character. She was everything Starbuck wanted to be: tough, respected, had her shit together, got what she wanted, stuck with her convictions, and didn’t sleep with Baltar. She wasn’t without her flaws, obviously, seeing as she had Roslin and Adama planning on her assassination, but it’s not like she was this completely amoral creature who made decisions based solely around her ego (hi, Baltar!). She just simply lived in an echo chamber, unlike Adama, who had Roslin and his own son acting as his conscience. I can’t say that I’d have made the same decisions as she did, but I can at least understand the methodology behind them.

Look, I know that Paul Campbell was wanting to get out of Battlestar Galactica to pursue other projects, and sure, he definitely had this right. But oh, Billy. Billy Billy Billy. You shouldn’t have died, my dude. Part of me wishes he’d survived just so Dee could realize that her relationship with Lee was the worst decision she ever made, because it fucking was. And the other part of me – the writer part – looks at the series as a whole and thinks, “Oh, my GOD, there are so many stories here to tell.”

I may have called Bear McCreary a god among composers, and dammit, I stand by it. His work on BSG is nothing short of incredible, and if I could, I would just stream every single video on YouTube, even if there were repeats. But I’m not going to do that; instead, I’m going to post my favorites from each season, and no one loses in this situation.
Enjoy!

I love me some space battles. Star Wars, Star Trek, Gundam Wing … they just get my blood pumping, what can I say? A lot of the blame sits on my dad’s shoulders, since he was the one who introduced me to Top Gun and was just as thrilled to watch the dogfighting scenes as I was. And BSG did not run short on these types of scenes, thankfully. I couldn’t just pick one, but I was able to narrow it down to two.

In Season Two’s “Flight of the Phoenix,” Chief Tyrol throws himself into the construction of a new fighter, a project that nearly everyone thinks is a waste of time. He works on it alone for the first part of the episode, ignoring all the naysayers and generally just trying to distract himself from all he’s lost since the beginning of the series. Caprica-Eight appearing aboard the Galactica isn’t helping matters, even resulting in him getting into a fist fight with Helo, to whom Tyrol admits his anger isn’t even about him or his relationship/love child with this new Sharon.

This entry, according to my post advertising my July blog challenge, was supposed to be best promo picture, but after hours of scanning through promotional art, I couldn’t really find one that really spoke to me, except maybe the Last Supper. You know the one:

It may or may not be my current desktop background as of this writing, but I don’t think I can interpret it any better than anyone else has. But it is an excellent segue into what I’ve chosen to write about today: my favorite Head-Six moment in the entire series.

Surprise, surprise, my favorite quote comes from my favorite character!

“Pilots call me Starbuck. You may refer to me as god.”
I love her so much.
31 Day Challenge: Battlestar Galactica, Day 22: Least Favorite Pairing
Okay, so it’s Monday again (how?), and I’m exhausted (because of course); guess what that means!! Today is going to be a super short entry. It’s pretty helpful, though, that the answer to this challenge day is incredibly easy: Anastasia Dualla and Lee Adama.

She looks like she’s questioning every decision she’s ever made, and honestly, I think she should.
Anyway, I already talked about it some yesterday, so I won’t rehash that stuff here, and I get that sometimes people end up with partners that just don’t seem to fit. In a narrative sense, I suppose it tracks that Lee would just jump to the first person who paid attention to him after Starbuck just up and marries Anders, but I expect more from Dee. She had Billy right the fuck in front of her! And she seemed so much smarter than that. Even her infatuation with him was so out of character and came out of nowhere.
Ugh, I just hate them together so much.
(Note: I almost had Tory and Tyrol as my least favorite pairing, because I just don’t get that one, but I absolutely love that the Chief found their past-life romance to be hilarious.)
31 Day Challenge: Battlestar Galactica, Day 21: Favorite Pairing
I’m going to admit something I really don’t like admitting because … well, it makes me feel all squishy inside: I really love seeing new romance bloom. Like, I hate those Hallmark movies that get released around Christmas because they are so stupidly unrealistic, but a well-told romance story with instant attraction and longing glances and awkward comments? Oh, god, that’s my Kryptonite. Maybe it’s because I’m really missing being in a relationship? Who knows, really.
